The Powtearoa Provincial Championship 2023

On the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of Dec 2023, Wellington hosted the first bi-annual, Powtearoa Provincial Championship (PPC). This was a team’s tournament with players representing (most) of the Blood Bowl playing regions of NZ.

There were 10 teams of 4 players each, for 40 players in total, and it was contested in 5 games over the two days.

The teams were: Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu, Kapiti, Wellington, Christchurch, and three conglomerate teams of stragglers (or folks that couldn’t find numbers to fill a full regional team): Barbarians, Wellington B, and the Rejects.

Auckland was represented by:
Evert Jan Loef - Grimr (Captain)
James Cardno - mahuika
John Willenbruch - parttimer
Daniel McNicoll – Dangermouse

The competition was fierce, and the banter was intense! Auckland went very close but, in the end, we needed to turn just one or two draws into wins and may have been able to take the title. Literally one or two dice rolls was all that was in it! As it was, we ended with 1 Win and 4 Draws to finish in 3rd place.

Wellington were deserved winners with 3 Wins and 2 Draws, with Christchurch taking 2nd place.

A huge congratulations to Wellington for doing their talking on the table and grinding out an impressive win.

Massive thanks to Andrew MacKenzie and Don MacKenzie and the Wellington crew for putting on an excellent event, and to all the teams and coaches that traveled and played great Blood Bowl and were bloody good company for the weekend.

Thanks to team Auckland for a huge effort, we just needed that dice to fall another way one-time! (or two). Thanks to Evert Jan Loef for leading us and doing the tactical analysis and team lists, John Willenbruch for chauffeuring us for the weekend, and to AirNZ for bumping James Cardno off the flight home when to be honest we’d had about enough of talking about Blood Bowl anyway :p

The next one will be couple of years’ time and if anyone is interested, make yourselves known. Teams play adds a whole new dimension and is loads of fun. The more coaches we have keen the tougher team selection will be, but the better the team will be for it!
